Linda; You asked if LUPUS was protected by the Americans With Disablilties Act and the answer is "YES". Basicially, Title I of the ADA says that your job should offer you accommodations for your disability. You can read title I at the following web-site:
www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada
or
www.eeoc.gov/facts/fs-ada.html
or you may call toll-free at:
1(800) 514-0301
With reference to your second question: The role of hormones in LUPUS is still not known, but there does seem to be an obvious correlation. SLE patients have been known to suffer both extremes (menorrhagia=excessive/ amenorrhea=decreased). Early menopause has also been noted with LUPUS patients. The most common cause of amenorrhea, however, is side-effects of steroid therapy, cyclophosphamide therapy or thalidomide.
Cyclophosphamide is an immunosuppressant also known as Cytoxan, Neosar, Procytox. It is used to treat kidney disease, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lymph systems and other conditions.
Thalidomide is used in treating resistant skin rashes in LUPUS patients. It was orginally a tranquilizer given to women, however, it caused a large number of birth defects which ended its use. Scientists have since found that Thalidomide can dampen harmful immune reactions and helps severe skin rashes in Lupus patients. It is not widely used!
So, amenorrhea is not uncommon in LUPUS patients! Talk to you doctor about your medications and your symptoms.
I hope that I have been helpful
